SUCCESS STORIES FROM OUR CLIENTS

Shawn has a vast knowledge in his profession. He never fails to encourage and challenge us, but still makes our sessions fun.

We feel that we would not have achieved the level of fitness and wellness we have at our age (65 years and 71 years currently) if not for Shawn's personal attention given in our training sessions.

I have been active all of my life. As a child, I unknowingly put the "function" in functional fitness. I walked, biked and ran as a form of transportation, climbed trees and cliffs, skated between frozen potato drills and at the local rink, jumped streams and hay bails, hopped, skipped, swam and wandered with no particular destination in mind. As I grew older and time became more scarce, I became involved in organized training. I have always cross trained and this has helped me age with few injuries and vitality. Weight lifting, spin classes, yoga, kick boxing , cross fit, TRX, Pilates, and various forms of cardio fitness provided me with rich and varied benefits. If there was a band wagon, I was on it! Since my early 30's, I have run approximately 60 marathons and a handful of Ultra marathons, including the challenging 24 hour, 125 km Canadian Death Race, in the wilds of Northern Alberta, as a solo participant. It continues to be one of the biggest accomplishments in my life. Not only did it test my physical fitness but also it demonstrated my technical skills, courage and mental strength. Physical fitness is the cornerstone of who I am and I often say, "I don't know where I would be without my feet." I became a client of Shawn Francis approximately 9 months ago following, oddly and prophetically enough, an injury to my foot. A woman stepped on my foot during the Berlin marathon. A MRI showed a partially torn posterior tibialis tendon which resulted in a cascade effect of other injuries. I was in a personal crisis. I noticed Shawn training others at the SPA and admired his professionalism, thoroughness, attention to detail and results. As luck would have it, when I approached Shawn about my current injury and the possibility of securing his services, he graciously took me on. His approach is humble and client centred. Each of his clients have a workout based on their strengths and challenges. One size does not fit all. The workouts are based on your needs. Shawn believes the body's alignment, balance, strength and flexibility starts from the feet and travels upward. His knowledge of the body as a complete and interconnected system, coupled with his ability and willingness to collaborate with other professionals for the good of his clients, is not only reassuring but also very effective. Shawn's training in fascial lines, which is huge in Europe, is cutting edge on PEI. It is such an effective way to train and is very respectful of the body as a complete system. The evidence based research to support fascial line training is undisputed. I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing osteopath and foot assessor who moved to PEI about 18 months ago. Their CV and experience is really quite something. In my consult with them, they spoke of the importance of fascia and fascial lines in a matter of fact way. I was impressed with the knowledge that Shawn's approach and their approach complimented and dovetailed each other so beautifully. I am getting stronger, have more flexibility and better balance as a result of Shawn's care. He is truly passionate about his work and it is wonderful to witness. Constantly upgrading, questioning, consulting and developing, he is the ultimate professional. Oh, and the foot? The pain is gone and I haven't needed surgery. Shawn is building me, in a meaningful and structurally sound way, from the ground up!

Shawn is a highly professional and knowledgeable trainer who has adapted my workout needs as necessary. Firstly to build up body strength, balance, and endurance to prepare for knee replacement surgery scheduled for April 2016.** Secondly to recover my strength after the knee surgery (Sept. 2016) . I resumed working with Shawn in Feb/17 and recovery has been much quicker with Shawn’s encouragement and workout program. I work with Shawn twice a week and look forward to each session. Each session is a bit different and Shawn introduces each exercise by doing it himself. His one-on-one approach insures that I have proper technique, and proper alignment to make for a safe workout. His patience, encouragement, sense of humor, dedication and “you can do it” attitude makes you want to strive to do more. (At 70 you need all the encouragement you can get) Shawn will push you to your limits and you will love it! I believe that Shawn will be one of the best investments you can make for yourself. **In Nov/2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and required chemo and radiation; I had to give up my training at the gym for 6 months. I believe that training with Shawn prior to the surgery gave me a healthier/stronger body and also helped with my cancer recovery. I could hardly wait to get back to the gym andstart working with Shawn to get ready for the knee surgery that was delayed until Sept/16.

I began one-to-one personal training with Shawn Francis of FranTrain Fitness 4.5 months ago. I was referred to Shawn by one of my runner friends who, like me, has suffered from a series of injuries. About 5 years ago, I injured my hip through long-distance running, and since then, have not been able to achieve peak fitness. On top of that, I broke my wrist this past winter, so you can imagine the rough shape I was in when I was introduced to Shawn. Physiotherapy was of course helpful with both injuries, but only got me to a certain point of healing. At the start, Shawn offered me a free 1-hour consultation sessionto evaluate my starting condition and goals. After explaining my series of unfortunate injuries, I asked if he was still willing to work with me. He of course said yes! I started with 10 sessions, training twice a week with Shawn, and saw a drastic improvement in my strength and mobility. I had zero expectations going into the training (other than to stop getting hurt!), so you can imagine how awesome it felt to finally start to build strength again, after doubting that I would ever get back to the state of fitness I had in my early 20s. After 10 sessions, I was hooked, so I signed up for 30 more, of which I have almost completed over the past few months. Shawn’s workouts are safe, effective, and most importantly,FUN! You can tell Shawn loves what he does! He continually educates himself with the latest science of fitness and shares his knowledge with each of his clients. His workouts focus on the fascial lines of the body, helping the body to not only strengthen, but to heal in the process. He changes up the workouts every session, so you are never bored and always challenged. He listens to you and your concerns, observes your bodymovements, and adjusts the workouts to meet your body’s needsfor each session. Being able to measure my improvements has been motivating. My previously broken wrist that had surgery less than 10 months ago, started at an 8 kg grip strength (at the start of Physiotherapy in March) and it now has a 37 kg grip strength (within 3 kg of my non-broken, dominant wrist). My Physiotherapist is very impressed with the strength I have built in such a short period of time, thanks to Shawn’s training. My hip is also now more stable due to the strength training sessions, which limits the pain from this injury. Additionally, I have not hurt myself anymore since I began training, and I feel strong and healthy once again! Honestly, I did not believe I would be able to be this physically fit again, but Shawn’s training program has changed my mind about this, and ultimately my life. I will be continuing the one-to-one training sessions with Shawn well into the future! I would highly recommend Shawn of FranTrain Fitness for anyone wanting to meet their goals, whatever those goals may be. You will not be disappointed!

In the post-prandial glow of holiday eating last Christmas, I returned to the gym in January after a decade of inactivity. My thrice weekly work outs were BORING and sweaty endeavours on the elliptical machine. I had never been a “gym rat” but for variety, I would occasionally throw in a few lats pull downs and bicep curls. The concept of personal training had never been on the radar until it was recommended by a fit septuagenarian. Previously, I thought personal training was primarily for the indulgence of celebrities and elite athletes. So, while sweating away on the elliptical machine, I watched Shawn Francis as he worked with clients of a broad demographic and varying levels of physical abilities. For those who aren’t aware, Shawn is a functional fitness trainer. His exercises employ simple equipment like tension bands, light dumbbells, occasionally TRX, balance balls, bosu balls and the (ever challenging) battle ropes. These exercises strengthen all your muscles but especially the ones in the “core” (trunk) which you don’t generally see. In simple terms, the core muscles help to maintain good musculoskeletal function and therefore, balance and posture. My decision to “sign up” became an easy one. After several weeks of observation, the benefit of functional training was evident. Specifically, Shawn was helping a client rehabilitate after a recent a joint replacement. As a physician, I could see tremendous progress after only a short period of time. This client was moving well and was way ahead of anyone else who might only have attended physiotherapy for the affected joint. About Shawn: he’s extremely affable and professional, and has enormous integrity. At the outset with all new clients, Shawn does a (physical) functional assessment and, carefully reviews medical history before creating a personalized work-out plan. During workouts, Shawn is focused on teaching, and is ever cognizant to correct postures and techniques to prevent client injury. The workouts are variable in intensity but never outside one’s comfort zone. Shawn is open to requests and suggestions, and is always encouraging (even about the dreaded battle ropes). I have been training with Shawn twice weekly for 8 months. It’s been great fun. I feel stronger now than I did 3 decades ago when I was much younger and more athletic. Would I recommend Shawn as a trainer? Absolutely!

My son Ryan has been going to Shawn for 2 years now. The summer before he could try out for Major Midget he wanted someone who would work with him on his goals and give him one on one training he definitely found that with Shawn. During Ryan's minor hockey years he has been involved in a lot of different work out programs but he has really enjoyed how Shawn focused on his own personal needs and Shawn really made his work outs geared to hockey working on balance, endurance and strength. Shawn was also very helpful in giving Ryan tips about rolling out muscles if they became sore and worked hard with Ryan setting him up for success. As a parent I am very pleased with the personal attention Ryan received from Shawn. Ryan reached his goal and made Major Midget his first year. Ryan will continue to train with Shawn for many reasons but the most important reason is because Ryan enjoys it and sees the results on the ice and he knows Shawn truly cares. Tracy Richards

My name is Diane Boyle. I am 55 years old and love fitness! I had a total knee replacement in 2013, I thought my fitness days were over until I was introduced to Shawn Francis of Fran Train Fitness. Shawn designed a program (which constantly changes according to my performance) and has been able to get my leg muscles back and I have regained tremendous overall body strength and balance. He taught me the importance of moving properly and how it all links together. I had cancer 2 years ago and after a 6 week gym break, I returned with Shawn as my mentor. He encouraged me through and helped me get my body strength back and my mind just followed. It was a great feeling! I am healthy today and stronger than I have ever been! Shawn is very professional & knowledgeable, he has a passion for guiding people to lead active lives no matter what their limitations may be. He is just as dedicated to the 55 year old woman trying to stay active (me!) as he is the elite 16 year old athlete. I’m in it for the long haul! Sincerely, Diane Boyle
